Workshop Experience
Neil November 23rd, 2005
Current workshop schedule: United Kingdom, Toronto CA
WHAT: An intensive workshop for photographers who want to improve their technical skills in order to free themselves from the limitations of location. Teaching a creative mindset and approach Neil will enable you to better capture and create with light at your command. Illustrated lectures and hands on exercises illustrating the principles of contrast and composition for photographers who wish to enlighten their creative process. Neil’s teaching will personally motivate your ability to see more possibilities by mastering the use of light. The course exercises will help you create a comparative catalog of lighting effects and properties leaving you continually learning from every shoot you do. The workshop fills two days of hands on instruction with Neil and includes a 3300k shoe flash filter and multimedia notes.
HOW: The workshop experience is a grassroots, down and dirty event - sponsored and facilitated by a local photographer or photo organization such as ASMP or PPA. We will meet in studios, houses and churches and use our location to motivate us to seriously re-program how we think about taking pictures. The workshop avoids crowded convention halls and big-name sponsors to bring you nothing but a focused personal learning experience. The class exercises use a consistent partner and so you may wish to bring someone you know, or expect to get to know someone new.
WHO: The learning experience is best suited for working photographers. We do NOT focus on how to use your camera, so you must know how to setup your camera before considering this class. The workshop does show you how your camera can manipulate the light and exposures. Neil will challenge the most advanced photographer to re-think their approach and should find some refreshing material to re-energize your thought process. Beginning photographers will have a LOT to digest, but the path is the same for beginners as for experts - Neil will show you the path and give you your first steps.

Participant responses
” One thing is for certain, I see things far differently that I ever thought possible. There are times I feel overwhelmed, but I am committed to becoming a better photographer and your seminar was the catalyst to that commitment. Photography is something that I know I have a passion for. I am not trying to ‘blow smoke’ but those couple of days, and your guidance is what has ignited that passion. You were able to take the art of photography to a new level, but also took us a step back to realize it isn’t just knowing when to trip the shutter,”

“I think you’re doing a great job with all of it. It’s all clear and your speaking voice works well for the medium. I think it’s great that you’re looking at the creative potential of light as much as dealing with the technical issues surrounding how to use light. Very nicely done!”

“what an amazing experience!! i see the world differently now. i spent all weekend in a daze…listening for what it was that the shadows were saying about the light. incredible concept, and so well thought out and presented on your end!! your workshop served as a major motivator in my work and approach to it. And “visual literacy”…worth the cost of admission right there!! thanks for everything Neil”

“I hope this is read openly as I really like this guy and I have never met him! I have however been privileged to access his programme materials and the messages are strong and clear…a breath of fresh air in acknowledging the importance of key lighting skills.
Fight the good fight Neil and I hope many more enjoy your teaching.”

“While shooting a wedding for one of my clients I saw one of Neil’s display albums at the Glenn Iris reception center. After looking at his work I found myself inspired to break free of the standard boring traditional wedding photography. I had to meet the artist. I recently attended Neil’s full day lighting seminar and I came back to my studio inspired and ready to put what I learned into action. Since Neil’s seminar, I have photographed three events using his lighting techniques and my results are incredible. Neil’s lighting techniques are amazing, and incredibly simple to implement. I recommend Neil’s seminar to anyone looking to take their photography and their lighting techniques to the next level.”

You know, I just can’t thank you enough for all you shared with me through the class and through the weekend. I am still trying to think about all that you said, I’ve just about devoured that book you gave me, and I am super excited with my “new found abilities”. I have been getting some really nice comments on the wedding I shot on 1/19, where I used, the best I could, the things you taught us. But I still can’t wait to make some extra $$ from this wedding to get me some AlienBees. Just wanted to say thank you….again.

“I am still reflecting on your workshop more than any other class I have been to. I was at a wedding three weeks ago and another photographer came over to ask why I was standing in this spot for the last 3-5 minutes. I told him (a class principle) that I had noticed how the light from the skylight had defined the edges of guests during the reception as they were talking. Great spot for good shots, was my reply. So if you need anyone to recommend your class, just let me know.”
